The working cocker spaniel is a variation of the English cocker spaniel, originally bred as a gun dog for retrieving game. Unlike show-line cockers, working cockers are leaner, more agile, and bred for stamina. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable. It's up to you to keep up.
As family pets, working cocker spaniels are affectionate and loyal, but they require regular mental and physical stimulation to match their energy levels. They have a captivating personality—alert and driven, yet content to cuddle after a day of activity.
These dogs need at least 1–2 hours of varied exercise daily, such as off-lead runs, scent work, or swimming. Without proper exercise, they can become restless and destructive; however, with enough activity, they are calm and loyal companions.
